Add the roles, seniority and region for your team to estimate the monthly and annual cost — with a per-role breakdown. Adjust the inputs to see it update instantly.
What drives team cost
Your team is almost always the biggest line item in building software. Three factors decide the number: how many people you hire, how senior they are, and where they work. A senior engineer can cost twice a junior; a US hire can cost twice the same role in Latin America or Asia.
Typical fully-loaded monthly cost per role
These are rough US mid-level figures including benefits and overhead; the calculator scales them by seniority and region.
- Full-stack engineer — around $12,000 / month.
- Backend engineer — around $11,500 / month.
- Frontend engineer & product manager — around $11,000 / month.
- Product designer — around $9,500 / month.
- QA engineer — around $8,000 / month.
Example team costs
One full-stack engineer and a designer.
Two engineers, a designer and a PM.
Multiple senior engineers plus design, PM and QA.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a software development team cost?
A small product team of three to five people typically costs $30,000–$90,000 per month fully loaded in the US, and considerably less in Eastern Europe, Latin America or Asia. Cost depends on team size, seniority mix and region — use the calculator above to model your own team.
What does 'fully-loaded' cost mean?
Fully-loaded cost is more than salary: it includes benefits, payroll taxes, equipment, software, office or remote-work stipends and general overhead. A common rule is that fully-loaded cost runs about 1.25–1.4× base salary. This calculator uses fully-loaded monthly figures.
How does region affect team cost?
Region is one of the biggest levers on cost. Western Europe often runs around 20% below US rates, while Latin America and South/Southeast Asia can be 50–60% lower for comparable seniority. Time-zone overlap, communication and hiring speed are trade-offs worth weighing alongside cost.
What roles does a small product team need?
A lean team usually pairs engineers (frontend, backend or full-stack) with a designer and someone owning product decisions. QA is often shared or added as the product grows. Start with the smallest team that can ship, then add specialists once you have traction.
